Protoma was named by Baird (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol R Sepkoski's reference number: 614]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); to Turritellinae by Harzhauser (2002); to Turritellidae by Harzhauser (2004); and to Protominae by Marwick (1957), Allmon (1996), Bouchet et al. (2005) and Harzhauser et al. (2009).
