Aphralysia was named by Garwood (1914) [Calcimicrobe]. It is considered to be a form taxon. It is the type genus of Aphralysiaceae.

It was assigned to Cyanophyta by Johnson and Konishi (1956); and to Aphralysiaceae by Vachard and Aretz (2004).
