Taxonomy
Orthoceras duseri was named by Hall and Whitfield (1875). It is the type species of Treptoceras.

It was recombined as Orthonybyoceras duseri by Teichert and Glenister (1953); it was recombined as Treptoceras duseri by Flower (1942) and Frey (1995).
