Orthoceras hammelli was named by Foerste (1910). It is the type species of Hammelloceras.
It was recombined as Spyroceras hammelli by Foerste (1924); it was recombined as Hammelloceras hammelli by Shimizu and Obata (1935); it was recombined as Gorbyoceras hammelli by Flower (1946).
