Atrypa capax was named by Conrad (1842).

It was recombined as Rhynchotrema capax by Conrad (1842) and Foerste (1924); it was recombined as Lepidocyclus capax by Wang (1942); it was recombined as Hiscobeccus capax by Amsden (1983).
