Neostringophyllum was named by Wedekind (1922).

It was synonymized subjectively with Acanthophyllum by Birenheide (1972); it was reranked as Acanthophyllum (Neostringophyllum) by Zhen (1994).

It was assigned to Rugosa by Wedekind (1922); and to Acanthophyllum by Zhen (1994).
