NOTE: this is based on a living genus, but the fossils are reported only from the Jurassic. These almost certainly are not Pterotrachea, but just as long as we do not range them through to the present, then it should not matter too much.

Pterotrachea was named by Forskal (1775) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066. ].
It was assigned to Firolidae by Wilson (1993); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterotracheidae by Rafinesque (1814) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
