Rhinocerina was named by Gray (1825).

It was corrected as Rhinocerotina by Bonaparte (1850); it was reranked as the subtribe Rhinocerotina by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Kaya and Heissig (2001).

It was assigned to Elephantidae by Gray (1825); to Rhinocerotidae by Bonaparte (1850); and to Rhinocerotini by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Kaya and Heissig (2001).
