Phoca stelleri was named by Fischer (1829). It is extant.
It was recombined as Otaria stelleri by Gray (1850) and Gray (1866); it was recombined as Eumetopias (Eumetopias) stelleri by Trouessart (1898); it was synonymized subjectively with Eumetopias jubata by Allen (1902) and Kellogg (1922); it was recombined as Eumetopias stelleri by Gray (1871), Allen (1880), Hay (1902), Trouessart (1904), Turner (1912) and Hay (1930).
