Vultur percnopterus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Neophron perenopterus by Savigny (1809) and Amadon (1977); it was recombined as Neophron percnopterus by Jaume et al. (1993) and Clements et al. (2017).
