Fox 1998Choristoderes that differ from closely related Champsosauridae by the following autapomorphies: snout elongate but less than 1/2 of skull length; postorbital/postfrontal always fused to form postorbitofrontal; reduced contact of parietal with postorbital/postfrontal complex; postorbital process complex; postorbital process of jugal low or lost; interpterygoid vacuity small, posteriorly located, not enclosed by pterygoid posteriorly; suborbital fenestra subtriangular with straight medial border; posterior openings of internal carotid artery penetrating parasphenoid and opening ventrally; posttemporal fenestra closed; paraoccipital process slightly deflected ventrally; mandibular symphysis anteroposteriorly short, restricted to anterior 1/3 of dentary tooth row; marginal tooth sockets transversely expanded
