Taxonomy
Hyphalosaurus was named by Gao et al. (1999). Its type is Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis. It was considered monophyletic by Gao and Ksepka (2008).
It was assigned to Diapsida by Gao et al. (1999); to Hyphalosauridae by Gao and Fox (2005), Gao and Li (2007), Gao and Ksepka (2008), Hou et al. (2010), Matsumoto and Evans (2010) and Zhou and Wang (2010); and to Choristodera by Matsumoto et al. (2013) and Matsumoto et al. (2019).
It was assigned to Diapsida by Gao et al. (1999); to Hyphalosauridae by Gao and Fox (2005), Gao and Li (2007), Gao and Ksepka (2008), Hou et al. (2010), Matsumoto and Evans (2010) and Zhou and Wang (2010); and to Choristodera by Matsumoto et al. (2013) and Matsumoto et al. (2019).
