Taxonomy
Neilsonia acuminata was named by Thomas (1940). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Craigenglen, which is in a Visean terrestrial limestone in the Lawmuir Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Spiroscala acuminata by Knight (1945) and Wagner (2023).
