Simia hamadryas was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Macacus hamadryas by Owen (1853); it was recombined as Papio hamadryas by Thomas (1911), Dandelot and Prévost (1972) and Zinner et al. (2008).
