Simia apella was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Cebus apella by Thomas (1911) and Wilson and Reeder (2005); it was recombined as Sapajus apella by Lynch Alfaro et al. (2012) and Burgin et al. (2018).
