Taxonomy
Hystrix prehensilis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Cercolabes.

It was recombined as Cercolabes prehensilis by Giebel (1883); it was recombined as Coendou prehensilis by Thomas (1911).
