Mus marmota was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Arctomys marmotta by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927); it was recombined as Marmota marmota by Blumenbach (1779), Thomas (1911) and Frase and Hoffmann (1980).
