Scalaria was named by Lamarck (1801) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 119]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Epitoniidae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
