Plectonotus derbyi was named by Clarke (1899). It is not extant. It is the type species of Plectonotus, Plectonotus (Plectonotus).
It was recombined as Bucanella (Plectonotus) derbyi by Knight et al. (1960); it was recombined as Bucanella derbyi by Berry and Boucot (1973); it was recombined as Plectonotus (Plectonotus) derbyi by Boucot et al. (1986).
