Taxonomy
Hyolithes similis was named by Walcott (1890). Its type specimen is USNM 18317, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Similotheca.

It was recombined as Similotheca similis by Malinky (1988) and Malinky and Skovsted (2004).
