Taxonomy
Palaeaster asperrima was named by Salter (1857). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Holotype BGS GSM 25334. It is the type species of Salteraster.
It was corrected as Palaeaster asperrimus by Salter (1865) and Stürtz (1886); it was recombined as Tetraster asperrimus by Nicholson and Etheridge (1880); it was recombined as Urasterella asperrima by Schuchert (1915); it was recombined as Urasterella asperrimus by Dean Shackleton (2005); it was recombined as Salteraster asperrimus by Spencer (1918), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake and Koniecki (2020).
