Lepidactinidae was named by Spencer (1918). Its type is Lepidactis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Lepidasteridae by Owen (1965); it was reranked as the subfamily Lepidactininae by Spencer and Wright (1966).

It was assigned to Asteroidea by Spencer (1918); and to Mesopalaeasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966).
