Taxonomy
Furcasteridae was named by Stürtz (1899). It is not extant. Its type is Furcaster.

It was synonymized subjectively with Lapworthuridae by Schuchert (1915).

It was assigned to Ophiuroidea by Spencer (1925); to Zeugophiuricae by Lehmann (1957) and Owen (1965); and to Zeugophiurina by Spencer and Wright (1966), Haude and Thomas (1983) and Boczarowski (2001).
