It was reranked as Equus (Hippotigris) by Skinner (1972); it was synonymized subjectively with Equus by Sclater (1900), Trouessart (1905), Lydekker (1916), Lundholm (1952), Ellerman et al. (1953), Azzaroli (1966), Groves and Willoughby (1981) and Prothero and Schoch (1989).
It was assigned to Equini by Quinn (1955); to Equidae by Mooser (1958); and to Equus by Skinner (1972).
