Haringtonhippus francisci

Mammalia - Perissodactyla - Equidae

Taxonomy
Equus francisci was named by Hay (1915) [NOT E. francisi, a misspelling; also said to be 1913]. Its type specimen is TAMU 2518, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Equus conversidens by Hay (1915), Hibbard (1939), Hibbard and Taylor (1960) and Dalquest and Hughes (1965); it was recombined as Asinus francisci by Quinn (1955) and Hibbard (1958); it was synonymized subjectively with Equus (Hemionus) tau by Dalquest (1979); it was synonymized subjectively with Equus tau by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Haringtonhippus francisci by Heintzman et al. (2017).

P. D. Heintzman et al. 2017Haringtonhippus is the sister genus to Equus (equid crown group), with Hippidion being sister to the Haringtonhippus-Equus clade (Figure 1). Haringtonhippus can be differentiated from Equus and Hip- pidion by 178 synapomorphic positions in the mitochondrial genome, including four insertions and 174 substitutions (Appendix 1—Table 2 and Appendix 1—table 2—source data 1). We caution that these synapomorphies are tentative and will likely be reduced in number as a greater diversity of mitochondrial genomes for extinct equids become available.
