Taxonomy
Spiromphalus was named by Hayasaka (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-l P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 117,157,1258]. Its type is Spiromphalus yabei.

It was assigned to Pseudozygopleurinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Palaeozygopleuridae by Hoare (1980); to Orthonemidae by Nützel and Bandel (2000); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
