Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
L. G. Barnes et al. 2006A species of Otariini of larger adult body size than Zalophus spp., but smaller than Eumetopias jubatus, having cranium with slightly arched dorsal profile rather than being depressed in intertemporal region, posterior ends of nasal bones not greatly compressed transversely, nearly parallel-sided intertemporal region, relatively wide interorbital region, relatively large and laterally-projecting supraorbital process of frontal, intertemporal region merging smoothly with anterior part of braincase without pronounced anterolateral corner of braincase, elevated posterior part of sagittal crest present on braincase, palate only slightly arched and not developed as a trough as in Otaria flavescens, mastoid process shaped as a somewhat cuboid mass, paroccipital process not reduced in size but projecting posteriorly, deep fossa developed in ventral surface of crest formed between mastoid process and paroccipital process, and M2 present.
A. W. Poust and R. W. Boessenecker 2017Otariid pinniped intermediate in size between Zalophus and Eumetopias, and differing from all other Otariidae in combined possession of the following characters: single-rooted postcanine dentition, long P4–M1 diastema pres- ent, M2 present, p1 with much smaller alveolus than p2, prena- rial process reduced, dorsally arched dorsal profile of interorbital region of skull, narrowest intertemporal constric- tion midway between supraorbital process and braincase, ante- roposteriorly elongate and dorsally convex sagittal crest, anterolateral profile of braincase smooth and lacking corner, mandible deepest below p1–p2, mandible lacking crest-like digastric insertion, and coronoid process of mandible that is not posteriorly overhanging.
