Taxonomy
Phoca ursina was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Arctocephalus ursinus by Gray (1850), Palmer (1904) and Turner (1912); it was recombined as Arctocephalus ursina by Gill (1866); it was recombined as Arctocephalus (Callorhinus) ursinus by Trouessart (1898); it was synonymized subjectively with Arctocephalus (Arctocephalus) pusillus by Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Callorhinus ursinus by Gray (1866), Gray (1871), Allen (1880), Thomas (1911), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Repenning and Tedford (1977), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Riedman (1990), Deméré et al. (2003), Wilson and Reeder (2005), Koretsky and Barnes (2006), Cullen et al. (2014), Boessenecker and Churchill (2015) and Berta et al. (2018).
