Nanorthidae was named by Havlicek (1977). Its type is Nanorthis.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Orthoidea by Williams et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Orthoidea by Williams et al. (2000); to Orthida by Benedetto (2007); and to Plectorthoidea by Benedetto and Muñoz (2017).
