Cetotherioidea was named by Steeman (2007). It is extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Chaeomysticeti by Bisconti et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Mysticeti by Rice (2009); to Chaeomysticeti by Steeman (2007) and Steeman (2010); to Mysticeti by Tarasenko and Lopatin (2012); and to Plicogulae by Gol'din and Steeman (2015) and Gol'din (2018).
