Taxonomy
Xerobates berlandieri was named by Agassiz (1857). It is extant. It is the type species of Xerobates.

It was recombined as Scaptochelys berlandieri by Bramble (1982); it was recombined as Gopherus berlandieri by Reynoso and Montellano-Ballesteros (2004).
