Taxonomy
Testudo polyphemus was named by Daudin (1802). It is extant. It is the type species of Gopherus.

It was recombined as Gopherus (Gopherus) polyphemus by Hutchison (1996); it was recombined as Gopherus polyphemus by Hay (1930), Brattstrom (1961), Bramble (1982), Reynoso and Montellano-Ballesteros (2004) and van Dijk et al. (2014).
