Gopherus depressus

Taxonomy
Gopherus depressus was named by Brattstrom (1961). Its type specimen is LACM-CIT 498/5133, a shell (entire shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cache Peak (LACM(CIT) 498), which is in a Hemingfordian/Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Bopesta Formation of California.

It was synonymized subjectively with Scaptochelys mohavense by Bramble (1982); it was synonymized subjectively with Gopherus mohavetus by Reynoso and Montellano-Ballesteros (2004).

E. Vlachos 2018Gopherus depressus can be diagnosed as a member of Gopherus based on the full list of characters provided above. Gopherus depressus differs from Gopherus hexagonatus in its smaller size and fully differentiated neural series, from Gopherus mohavensis in the narrower cervical, neural VI with short anterolateral sides, shorter pectorals medially, contact between the inguinals and femorals, and Gopherus edae in the narrower vertebrals and the contact between the inguinal and femoral scute.
