Xerobates berlandieri was named by Agassiz (1857). It is extant.

It was recombined as Scaptochelys berlandieri by Bramble (1982); it was recombined as Gopherus berlandieri by Reynoso and Montellano-Ballesteros (2004) and van Dijk et al. (2014).
