Monodonta cerberi was named by Brongniart (1823) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene; Italy.]. Its type specimen is NHMW 2001z0169/0007, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Clanculus cerberi by Oppenheim (1900) and Harzhauser (2004).

M. Harzhauser 2004Small-sized, trochiform shells consisting of three spire whorls with an apical angle of about 110°. Suture hardly incised, separating convex whorls with rather flat adapical part. Six to seven strong spiral threads form the ornamentation of the whorls; another two threads with secondary intercalations appear on the base of the penultimate whorl where the body whorl is broken
