Testudo picta was named by Schneider (1783). It is extant.

It was recombined as Chrysemys picta by Gray (1844), Cope (1875), Bragg and Bragg (1957), Holman and Sullivan (1981), Seidel and Smith (1986) and Holman et al. (1990).
