Testudo picta was named by Schneider (1783). It is extant. It is the type species of Chrysemys.
It was recombined as Chrysemys picta by Gray (1844), Cope (1875), Hay (1930), Bragg and Bragg (1957), Holman and Sullivan (1981), Seidel and Smith (1986), Holman et al. (1990) and van Dijk et al. (2014).
