Pitaria (Katherinella) was named by Tegland (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Katherinella by Woodring (1938), Stenzel et al. (1957), Vokes (1980) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Veneridae by Woodring (1938); to Pitaria by Tegland (1929) and Durham (1944); to Pitarinae by Stenzel et al. (1957) and Vokes (1980); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
