Taxonomy
Platydyptes marplesi was named by Simpson (1971). Its type specimen is OM C.47.15, a partial skeleton, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Duntroon (Kokoamu Greensand), which is in a Duntroonian offshore shelf limestone in the Kokoamu Greensand Formation of New Zealand.
