Anthropornithinae was named by Simpson (1946).

It was synonymized subjectively with Palaeeudyptinae by Brodkorb (1963).

It was assigned to Spheniscidae by Simpson (1946), Tambussi et al. (2005) and Tambussi et al. (2006).
