Tetraonidae was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type is Tetrao.

It was reranked as the subfamily Tetraoninae by Peterson (1999) and Livezey and Zusi (2007).

It was assigned to Phasianides by Lambrecht (1933); to Phasanidae by Peterson (1999); to Galliformes by Crowe et al. (2006); and to Phasianidae by Livezey and Zusi (2007).
