Taxonomy
Leptoptilos was named by Lesson (1831). It is extant. It is the type genus of Leptoptilini. It was considered monophyletic by Kahl (1972).

It was assigned to Aves by Lesson (1831); to Leptoptilini by Kahl (1972) and Meijer and Awe Due (2010); and to Ciconiidae by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1964), Louchart et al. (2008), Meijer et al. (2013) and Clements et al. (2017).
