Taxonomy
Leptoptilos was named by Lesson (1831). It is extant. It is the type genus of Leptoptilini. It was considered monophyletic by Kahl (1972).
It was assigned to Aves by Lesson (1831); to Leptoptilini by Kahl (1972) and Meijer and Awe Due (2010); and to Ciconiidae by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1964), Mlikovsky (2002), Louchart et al. (2008), Meijer et al. (2013), Clements et al. (2017) and Tambussi et al. (2023).
It was assigned to Aves by Lesson (1831); to Leptoptilini by Kahl (1972) and Meijer and Awe Due (2010); and to Ciconiidae by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1964), Mlikovsky (2002), Louchart et al. (2008), Meijer et al. (2013), Clements et al. (2017) and Tambussi et al. (2023).
