Ardea grus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Grus.
It was recombined as Grus grus by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Mlikovsky (2002), Bedetti and Pavia (2013), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017) and Carrera et al. (2018).
