Taxonomy
Lophortyx shotwelli was named by Brodkorb (1958). Its type specimen is UOMNH no. F-3611, a limb element (proximal portion of left humerus), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is McKay Reservoir, which is in a Hemphillian pond sandstone in the McKay Formation of Oregon.
