Tenuicerithium was named by Cossmann (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Ol Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. Its type is Cerithium fragile.

It was assigned to Cerithiinae by Hoerle (1972); to Cerithiadae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pleisotrochidae by Harzhauser (2007).
