Protocitta ajax was named by Brodkorb (1972). Its type specimen is Univ. Calif. Mus. Paleo. No. 43386, a limb element (left tarsometatarsus), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Palo Duro Falls, which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in Texas.
