Taxonomy
Bubo leptosteus was named by Marsh (1871). Its type specimen is Yale University Peabody Museum no. 512, a limb element (distal end of a left tibia), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Protostrix leptosteus by Wetmore (1937), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956) and Rich (1982).
