Ardea mexicana was named by Müller (1776). It is extant.

It was recombined as Grus mexicanus by Hay (1930).

Synonyms
  • Grus haydeni was named by Marsh (1870) [type specimen from the "late Tertiary beds" of the "Niobrara River" ]. It is a 3D body fossil.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Megalornis pratensis by Wetmore (1928); it was synonymized subjectively with Grus mexicanus by Hay (1930).
