Murex margaritaceus was named by Brocchi (1814) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene-Early Miocene; Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Cerithium margaritaceum by Hörnes (1856); it was recombined as Potamides margaritaceus by Sacco (1888); it was recombined as Tympanotonos margaritaceus by Cossmann and Peyrot (1922), Harzhauser and Mandic (2001) and Harzhauser (2004); it was recombined as Mesohalina margaritacea by Wittibschlager (1983) and Wittibschlager (1983); it was recombined as Tympanotonos (Tympanotonos) margaritaceus by Taner (1996); it was recombined as Mesohalina margaritaceus by Marquet et al. (2008).
