Murex rimosus was named by Solander (1766) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene-Early Oligocene; Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Rostellaria rimosa by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Rostellaria (Rimella) rimosa by Lowry et al. (1866); it was recombined as Rimella rimosa by Morellet and Morellet (1935) and Harzhauser (2004).
